Stitched in 1827 , the Sarah Hartley sampler shows remarkable similarities to the sampler stitched by Mary Jane Gettys and reproduced in volume 1 of the Sampler and Antique Quarterly magazine. there are more floral motifs on the Hartley sampler, but both have the same basic design style. From this an assumption can be made that they wer taught by the same instructress.
The original sampler, located in a private collection, is about 19cm x 19cm. It has been stitched with cotton threads on an unevenweave linen fabric.
DMC cotton floss is used in the reproduction of this beautiful sampler, with the colours being matched to the thread colours from the front of the sampler. The linen is 28ct Amber linen from Wichelt, though I could see this sampler being stitched on Autumn Gold by Lakeside Linens.
Sarah Hartley is one of several reproduction sampler charts produced by Historic Stitches that we have at The Needlework Boutique.
