First Tuesday in November

Here in Melbourne, the first Tuesday in November has been a public holiday for many years, as the ‘race that stops the nation’, the Melbourne Cup, is hosted here, at Flemington Racecourse.  I took advantage of having a day off to complete a small patchwork top that I started several years ago when I first started going to Mrs Martin’s Quilt Shop for the regular sit and sew evenings.  Back then I joined her monthly miniature night, and started on Jo Morton’s ‘Small Strippy Quilt’ from her “Jo’s Little Women” club.  I had everything cut out, including the triangles, when I realised that I had too many floral fabrics.  So I bought the dark green fabric, but before I could cut it, the miniatures nights finished.  Recently I decided that it was time to finish this quilt top, so several weeks ago, I spent about two hours on the quilt top, finishing it off today.

For a while there I was a bit concerned that the border fabric would not work with the 3 strips in the centre, but once I had finished putting it together, I was very happy with the outcome.  One of the things I did was to press it very carefully at each step so that the finished quilt would be perfectly flat. I have the backing fabric, and I think enough batting, so the next task is to quilt it.  I think I will hand quilt this project, as it should not take too long…
